Kindaichi Case Files Manga Gets 1st Live-Action Series in 13 Years

The detective manga Kindaichi Shonen no Jikenbo (Kindaichi Case Files or The File of Kindaichi) is inspiring its first live-action television series in about 13 years. Ryōsuke Yamada of the boy band Hey! Say! JUMP will reprise the title role of Hajime Kindaichi in Kindaichi Shonen no Jikenbo N (neo) on Saturdays this July. He already played the young detective in twoprevious television specials in 2013 and 2014.
Returning from Yamada's previous specials is Haruna Kawaguchi as Hajime's childhood friend Miyuki Nanase.
Also returning is Hey! Say! JUMP member Daiki Arioka as Mystery Club member Ryūji Saki.
Yōsuke Asari will play Makoto Makabe, the head of the Mystery Club.
Comedian Tomomitsu Yamaguchi ("Gussan") will join the cast as the fourth actor to play police inspector Isamu Kenmochi.
In the story, Hajime Kindaichi is a high school student who solves any case or mystery with his IQ of 180. He usually seems dull, but when there is a case, he demonstrates remarkable deductive skills inherited from his famous detective grandfather.
Yōzaburō Kanari and Fumiya Sato serialized the originalKindaichi Case Files manga from 1992 to 2001 in KodanshaWeekly Shōnen Magazine, and the story is back in a new manga series, Kindaichi Case Files R, that started last year. (There are also two more spinoff manga this year.) The original manga has over 90 million copies in print, and it sparked a mystery manga boom in Japan. Tokyopop published part of the manga in North America.
Yamada is the fourth actor to play Hajime Kindaichi, after KinKi Kids group member Tsuyoshi Dōmoto in 1995, Arashi member Jun Matsumoto in 2001, and KAT-TUN member Kazuya Kamenashi in 2005.
The manga inspired a television anime which ran from April 1997 to September 2000. Video Research reported that its highest ever rating in Tokyo's Kanto area was 19.0%, and it averaged 14.8%. The manga also inspired two anime films, two television anime specials in November 2007, as well as several original video anime.
The manga just inspired a new web anime from FROGMAN (Eagle TalonThermae Romae) in January, followed by a brand-new The File of Kindaichi Returns television anime series in April.Crunchyroll is streaming the new television anime as it airs in Japan. Like the new live-action series, the new anime series is running on Saturdays.

Sentai Filmworks Reveals Amnesia English Dub Cast, Release Date

North American anime licensing company Sentai Filmworksannounced its dub cast for the Amnesia anime series on Friday. The company will release the series on June 3 on DVD and Blu-ray Disc. Kyle Colby Jones is directing the following cast:
HeroineMaggie Flecknoe
OrionShannon Emerick
TomaChristopher Ayres
IkkiBlake Shepard
ShinHouston Hayes
KentoTyler Galindo
WakaJay Hickman
UkyoPatrick Poole
MineMolly Searcy
RikaGenevieve Simmons
Sentai Filmworks describes the story of the anime adaptation of Otomate's original female-oriented romance game:
She runs through the flaming building seeking escape. She struggles in the water, desperate to keep afloat. She wakes in the hospital, with no knowledge of how she got there or memory of who she was. People she doesn't know come to visit her, but only the one whom no one else can see, the spirit boy who calls himself Olion, seems to understand what has happened to her, and he tells her not to let anyone know of her amnesia.
As the Heroine struggles to recall her past and connect the random recollections in her mind to form memories, one thing seems sure: time is no longer a constant, and the date of August 1st - the day she keeps waking up in the hospital - is somehow significant. So are each of the people she meets, though the stories that link her to them seem to shift like sands in an emptying hourglass. Will she be able put the pieces of the puzzle together, and what will she see if it becomes complete?
Crunchyroll streamed the series in various countries outside of Japan as it aired last winter.

Anime Limited Plans Patema Inverted U.K. Kickstarter Campaign

Anime Limited has announced plans to launch a Kickstarter for a "Definitive' home edition of the feature film Patema Inverted. The company has also put up a draft page (not live) on the Kickstarter site, giving a goal of £16,000.
The Kickstarter page specifies, 'Anime Limited is already a good way into production including the dub with NYAV Post... We are already planning a collector's edition release of this film similar to our previous releases."
However, the Kickstarter would be geared towards launching an 'Ultimate Edition' unique to the UK. It would include a 136-page art book, a custom digipack, and other extras.
According to Anime Limited's site, the Kickstarter campaign will provisionally go live on May 2. If the initial target is reached, possible stretch goals would include exclusive illustrations from the character and background designers; the soundtrack as released in the Japanese Collector's Edition; and additional written content. The Kickstarter would have no impact on Anime Limited's release of Mai Mai Miracle.
From the draft Kickstarter page:
For a film of this high quality, there are so many ways to create a deluxe edition. This Kickstarter campaign will allow us to go above and beyond even our usual quality in order to give fans in the UK the definitive edition of the film - a cut above even our normal high quality of release.
In short - this campaign will allow us to arrange and package Patema Inverted in the best possible way, which would not usually be commercially viable. It will also give you the chance to own the title before it hits general retail...
We're trying to create a new breed of product that goes above and beyond even our regular collector's format. The main risk of doing this, is that this kind of release would be simply beyond what is reasonable to just "put up on Amazon and see if it works". Our aspirations for this title go well beyond that.
If we were to release the definitive edition normally, i.e. via Amazon or other retailers immediately, the cost of the release would need to be about £84.99. That is simply too high, especially if we want to get this edition into the hands of as many fans as possible at a reasonable price point.
That's why we are proposing a 1,500 unit print run, every edition numbered, exclusive to Kickstarter with any remaining units leftover to be sold at a higher price via retail at a later date (SRP of £84.99).
In addition, we're trialling a new model of release that means if you support the Kickstarter for the amaray or regular collector's combi-packs, you'll get it before it hits retailers. So, if you support our attempt to make a cool release early you get your copy early.
The Kickstarter page details where the money would go, specifying that none of it would be used to pay for the rights to the Patema Inverted art book or film. The tiered rewards, listed on the right on the Kickstarter page, include different editions of the Patema Inverted release, from an Amaray Blu-ray/DVD combo pack up to the 'Ultimate Edition' of the film.

"Cool Japan" Mall Set To Open In China

The "Cool Japan Promotion Organization," an organization dedicated to bringing traditional and popular Japanese culture to countries overseas through various business projects, has announced their plans to open a Japanese mall in the Chinese city of Ningbo, Zhejiang. The mall will provide shoppers with a unique Japanese shopping experience, including clothing stores and anime theaters, alongside other distinctly Japanese businesses.
The mall is the first step in "Cool Japan's" attempt to open up business ventures abroad, as many companies in Japan are reluctant to do so. "Cool Japan" is supported by both public and private entities is seen by the Abe administration as an attempt to improve the image of Japan abroad by making it seem "cool." This particular organization was started in November of last year to encourage and participate in the exportation of iconic Japanese goods, including music, food, anime and video games.
Altogether, the mall is estimated to cost approximately 56 billion yen, 10 billion of which will be provided directly from "Cool Japan" holdings. "Cool Japan" is working directly with the H2O Retailing Corporation of Osaka, who will be operating the mall once it has been built. H2O Retailing is responsible for the management of department stores throughout Japan, including Hankyu and Hanshin. At this time, no official date has been provided as to when the mall will be completed.
Following the conclusion of this project, "Cool Japan" will move on to the next part of their business abroad campaign, which will be a television station that will broadcast Japanese shows, anime, and films throughout Southeast Asia. The project will start with a 5 to 10 billion yen investment and is intended to be kicked off in Indonesia before spreading to other parts of the region. It will be a collaborative effort with the Tokyo based broadcasting company SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation.
The third part of the campaign is a Japanese restaurant district to be set in Singapore. "Cool Japan" plans to invest 1 billion yen into this phase of the project.

DW wins BAFTA awards

Doctor Who picked up two BAFTA Television Craft Awards at last night's ceremony, held at The Brewery in London.

The annual event celebrates the very best behind-the-scenes talent in British television of the past year, and the 50th-anniversary specialThe Day of the Doctor won the Special, Visual & Graphic Effects title, with Milk VFX, Real SFX and The Model Unit being named in the citation, while An Adventure In Space And Time - the BBC Two drama centring on the genesis of Doctor Who - won for Make Up and Hair Design, with Vickie Langnamed in the citation.

The triumph by The Day of the Doctor ended a seven-year run of being nominated in that category but losing.

Doctor Who At The Proms 2013, which had been nominated for Entertainment Craft Team, lost out to Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway. An Adventure In Space And Time had also been nominated for Costume Design and Editing - Fiction but was pipped to those titles by Downton Abbey and The Fall respectively.

Telos revamps website + discount

Telos Publishing has revamped its website and to mark the change it is offering 10 per cent off all purchases for a limited period.

The publisher of genre books is a UK-based independent press that was set up by David J Howe and Stephen James Walker in 2000. Its wide-ranging portfolio includes Doctor Who plus other cult TV shows, film, crime, mystery, thrillers, horror and dark fantasy.

Howe, who is the publishing director, said:
It was time for a change. The original site had served us well for many years, but the world of online sales has moved on and we needed to catch up! One of the issues with the original site was that we couldn't easily offer discounts without extensive coding work. But the new site allows us to be flexible and to present sales and offers across our range, whenever we want.
Telos's catalogue has grown since the company's inception and now features more than 140 titles. It specialises in guides to a variety of cult television and film series but also has a growing fiction catalogue, including works from authors such as Simon Clark, Graham Masterton, Mike Ripley, Hank Janson, Andrew Hook and Sam Stone. New titles for 2014 will include an extensive guide to the TV series The Avengers.

The Telos site can be found at and there are sale offers across the entire range, with some titles at 99p.

Howe said:
We decided to reduce the prices across all the ranges, where the books had been available for some time, or where we had fairly high stock levels remaining. Hopefully this means that buyers can pick up some bargains, whether from our well-received Time Hunter series, which spun off from our Doctor Who fiction range, or across our horror novels and novellas, where titles by authors such as Stephen Gallagher, Steve Savile, George Mann and T M Wright can be snapped up.
Telos is also currently offering 10 per cent off everything bought via its website. The discount can be obtained by entering the code newwebsite14 at the checkout, and the offer is available until Saturday 31st May.
